American Political Science Association (APSA) – August/September, 2012 (deadline passed)
This is the leading conference in political science, arranged by APSA, who is behind the number 1 political science journal, the American Political Science Review. It is a general political science conference that covers all areas of the discipline. The web-page for the conference is http://www.apsanet.org/2012. Its location varies from year to year, and this year it is held in New Orleans at both the New Orleans Marriot (http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/msyla-new-orleans-marriott/) and the Sheraton New Orleans (http://www.sheratonneworleans.com) hotels. For American participants the dress code is suit and tie for men and dress for female participants. European participants can get away with a suit without a tie.
For the paper presentation you are expected to give a 15 minute presentation of your research paper, and computers are available so you only need to bring a memory-stick for your power point slides. Regarding the poster session, these are located in the main mingling room of the conference. You can either bring a large poster or print out figures and text to put on your assigned board. There is a review-process for paper-proposals for the conference, and there is a chance that your paper can be rejected.
One great advantage of this conference is the fact that it holds daily receptions for each topic, which provides a way for new researchers to get to know other in their fields. These receptions are held at 19:00 each evening.
New Orleans is the largest city in Louisiana. Here you will find the roots of Jazz music as well as the famous French Quarter. The temperature during the conference ranges from 70 to 90 Fahrenheit (or 21 to 32 Celsius) with a chance of rain. When in New Orleans make sure you try the Cajun food (Cajun are a Louisiana people of French origin, known for hunting crocodiles and making good food). There is somewhat of a crime issue in New Orleans, so be aware and stick to the central parts.
Southern Political Science Association (SPSA) – January, 2013 (deadline passed)
The SPSA is the number 3 political association in America (and thus the world), and is behind the Journal of Politics. The web-page for the conference is http://ww.spsa.net. The call for proposals deadline was August 9, 2012. The conference is located in the Peabody Hotel in Orlando Florida (http://www.peabodyorlando.com). The SPSA is a general political science conference that covers all areas of the discipline. The dress code is suit and tie for men and dress for female participants. This is a more “US” conference than APSA and MPSA meaning that there are fewer European participants (though they are present).
Orlando is located in central Florida, and is close to Disney World, Universal Studios, and Sea World. The temperature during the conference ranges from 50 to 72 Fahrenheit (or 10 to 23 Celsius). The city is home to the NBA team Orlando Magic.
International Studies Association (ISA) – April, 2013 (deadline passed)
The ISA-conference is the biggest international relations event. The conference holds panels, roundtables, and specialty sessions. The web-page for the conference is http://www.isanet.org/annual_convention/. The flagship journal of ISA is the International Studies Quarterly.
Next year’s conference takes place in San Francisco from April 3–6. San Francisco is the heart of the Bay area, which also encompasses cities like San Hose and Berkeley. Here you will find attractions like the Golden Gate and the Fisherman’s Wharf. It is easy to get around using the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transport). The conference is located in the Hilton San Francisco Union Square (http://www.nhiltonsanfranciscohotel.com). The temperature during the conference ranges from 50 to 63 Fahrenheit (or 10 to 17 Celsius).
Midwest Political Science Association (MPSA) – April, 2013 (deadline October 2012)
The 71st annual MPSA Conference will take place from April 11 through April 14, 2013. The participants can choose to present either a paper, at a roundtable, or a poster. The deadlines are October 5, 2012 (paper and roundtable) and November 30, 2012 (poster session). The web-page for the conference is http://www.mpsanet.org. The conference is held by the MPSA, who is also behind the number 2 political science journal, the American Journal of Political Science. The conference covers all fields of political science. For American participants the dress code is suit and tie for men and dress for female participants. European participants can get away with a suit without a tie.

As every year the location is the Palmer House Hilton in downtown Chicago. The hotel is centrally located, and organizational-wise the conference benefits from having the same location every year. For more affordable housing (e.g., for grad students) an option is Hostelling International (also downtown Chicago http://www.hichicago.org).
Despite being USAs third largest city, the downtown area is small (one can get everywhere by foot) and relatively safe. There are two main shopping streets: Michigan Avenue and State Street. For the sport interested political scientist the conference can be combined with matches of Cubs or White Sox (baseball), Blackhawks (ice hockey), or Bulls (basketball). For dining, there are three Subway restaurants close to Palmer House (easy breakfast or lunch). An affordable lunch or dinner can be found at the Wok Out at 823 State Street, or for the classy great steak one has the Powerhouse restaurant and bar at 215 North Clinton Street (expensive but magnificent steaks, requires a taxi-ride). Chicago is also a great place to renew your wardrobe or to dress up for the conference. One possibility is Men’s Suits New York, located on the Magnificent Mile (535 N. Michigan Avenue). The temperature during the conference ranges from 39 to 58 Fahrenheit (or 4 to 15 Celsius).
European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) – September, 2013
The 7th ECPR General Conference will take place in Bordeaux, France, on September 5–7, 2013. The European Consortium for Political Research is behind the journal European Journal of Political Research. Bordeaux is a major city in southern France. When in Bordeaux make sure you go for a walk along the Saint-Catherine Street and enjoy the view. The main sport in southern France is actually rugby league, so make sure you get tickets for a game with the local Union GABBG at the Stade Andre Moga, or you can enjoy a football match with the F.C. Girondins. The temperature during the conference ranges from 54 to 74 Fahrenheit (or 12 to 23 Celsius).
International Social Science Council (ISSC) – October, 2013
The 2013 World Social Science Forum named “Social transformation and the digital age” will be held in Montreal, Canada, on October 13–15. It is organized by the ISSC and the International Political Science Association (IPSA) who is behind the journal International Political Science Review. Montreal is the main city in the Canadian city of Quebec. Despite being a part of Canada, the language there is French. When in Montreal you can do some gambling in the Casino de Montréal or watch a hockey game with the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre. The temperature during the conference ranges from 37 to 55 Fahrenheit (or 3 to 13 Celsius).
